LRN Qualifications
LRN qualifications are developed to be relevant, rigorously assessed, and accurately represent a candidate’s abilities and knowledge. These qualifications are well-structured and offer a clear path for progression towards higher education and professional development. In addition, LRN qualifications are valuable as standalone awards, providing assurance to both candidates and potential employers of the candidate’s competence at that level.
Introduction
This specification provides an overview of the LRN Level 3 Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (ELTAB) for candidates, centers, administrators, employers, teachers, and examiners. It outlines the essential features and administrative procedures for this qualification.
Objective
The ELTAB program aims to enhance candidates’ knowledge, understanding, and teaching practices related to the English language. This intensive study program enables candidates to obtain a recognized teaching qualification, focusing on teaching English to speakers of other languages or teaching English Language.
Candidate Category
The ELTAB program is suitable for candidates who:
– Seek personal development or practical skills for a teaching career;
– Possess limited or no qualifications or experience in teaching English to adults;
– Desire to develop their understanding and/or obtain a recognized Level 3 qualification in teaching English Language.
Entry Requirements
Candidates should have:
– Proficiency in English across all four language skills (i.e., listening, speaking, reading, writing) equivalent to B1 on the CEFR
– A solid understanding of literacy, numeracy, and ICT equivalent to Level 2
– Access to at least 3 hours of teaching practice in English Language education. While prior basic teaching experience is not required, centers can establish their entry requirements based on their expertise and understanding of the sector’s needs. Initial assessments are crucial to determine a candidate’s suitability for the course.
Knowledge, Skills, and Understanding
Given the qualification’s nature and the required teaching abilities, LRN mandates that candidates possess the necessary knowledge, skills, and understanding of teaching practices and principles.
Support and Recognition
This qualification has been developed with the support of centers currently delivering or planning to deliver qualifications at this level in Education and Training.
Branding
Although the qualification’s formal title is the LRN Level 3 Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages, it will be branded as ELTAB. LRN will provide accurate information regarding this qualification’s title to centers, candidates, and other stakeholders.
Progression
The diverse backgrounds, education levels, and career goals of ELTAB candidates necessitate a range of progression opportunities. Depending on the qualification level achieved, candidates may progress to:
– Level 4 Diploma in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (subject to individual Awarding Organization (AO) requirements)
– A degree-level program in a teaching-related discipline
– Any other AO qualification at level 4 or above in teaching or another discipline (subject to individual AO requirements)

Teaching Qualifications
The ELTAB is designed for candidates with little or no experience in teaching the English language. This intensive study program requires a full commitment and covers three units: language awareness and analysis, planning and managing the teaching and learning process, and the practical application of teaching skills in ELT.
Mode of Delivery
This qualification can be delivered within centers or through distance learning. Centers must demonstrate to LRN, via the center recognition process, that they possess the resources, facilities, and competence to deliver the qualification using either method. Centers may apply to offer both methods if desired. However, centers must meet LR N’s criteria, proving they have the means, capability, capacity, and resources (including suitably qualified staff) to deliver the chosen method. Regardless of the delivery method, centers must ensure that practical teaching is observed and assessed.
Language of Assessment
LRN is committed to using clear, unbiased, and plain English that is accessible to all candidates. LRN will ensure that assessment materials, stimuli, and the assessment process itself are conducted in English.
Credit Values and Rules of Combination
Although determining credit is no longer mandatory, LRN has chosen to continue applying credit to its qualifications. Each unit within a qualification has a credit value and a level. The credit value indicates the number of credits awarded to a candidate who has achieved the unit’s learning outcomes. The level represents relative demand, complexity, depth of achievement, and autonomy.
The learning time is a notional measure indicating the average time it takes for a candidate at the unit’s level to complete the learning outcomes to the standard determined by the assessment criteria. Learning time encompasses activities such as directed study, assessment, tutorials, mentoring, and individual private study. The unit’s credit value remains constant across all contexts, regardless of the assessment method or mode of delivery. Candidates will only be awarded credits for the successful completion of whole units.
